Dr. Cosimo Ligorio Recognised for Outstanding Contributions to Biomaterials and Regenerative Medicine

We are delighted to share a series of recent achievements from Dr. Cosimo Ligorio, whose research is helping to drive forward new approaches to bioactive material design, stem cell expansion, and regenerative therapies.

New Publication in Advanced Materials

Dr. Ligorio, in collaboration with Professor Alvaro Mata, has published a significant new article titled:
“Functional Biomaterials Through Biocooperation.”
Appearing in Advanced Materials (2026), the paper explores how biocooperative interactions can be engineered to create functional materials with therapeutic potential.

Award‑Winning Oral Presentation

At the 7th Biomaterials in Healthcare 2026 Workshop (Nottingham, UK), Dr. Ligorio delivered the talk:
“Converting blood and bone marrow into bioactive materials for regeneration and stem cell expansion.”
The presentation received the Outstanding Oral Presentation Award, highlighting the innovation and translational promise of this work.

Keynote Contributions from the Group

As part of the team’s wider research impact, collaborator Professor Alvaro Mata delivered two invited keynote lectures in January:

  • SNOOPY Action COST – European Research Network, Nottingham
Bioinspired and biocooperative strategies for regenerative medicine.

  • RSC Chemical Nanoscience & Nanotechnology Symposium, London
    Bioinspired materials for tissue engineering.

These talks underscore the growing influence of the research programme Dr. Ligorio contributes to.

Recognition in The Engineer’s C2i Awards 2025

The group’s project, “Transforming whole blood into accessible and personalised regenerative implants,” was awarded Runner‑Up in the Medical & Healthcare category of The Engineer’s C2i Awards 2025. This recognition highlights both the technical innovation and potential real‑world impact of the work.
