The MAINSTREAM Hub is a collaborative effort led by three world-class academic institutions: the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, and the University of Nottingham. Together, they bring complimentary expertise, infrastructure, and a shared commitment to research excellence, societal impact, and inclusive innovation.

  • University of Glasgow

As the lead institution, the University of Glasgow drives the strategic direction of the MAINSTREAM Hub. The team brings internationally recognised expertise in mechanobiology, biomaterials, and stem cell engineering, particularly through the Centre for the Cellular Microenvironment (CeMi). Glasgow leads on impact strategy, with a strong focus on translating research into real-world therapies. The University also champions patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE), ensuring research is co-created with end users and reflects diverse societal needs. Their established EDI structures and commitment to responsible research and innovation underpin an inclusive and ethical research culture across the Hub.

One of Glasgow’s key contributions is the integration of Brillouin microscopy, a cutting-edge, label-free imaging technique that allows the mechanical properties of living cells and tissues to be assessed in real time. This tool will enable us to monitor stem cell health, ageing, and response to engineered environments with unprecedented precision—critical for ensuring quality and reproducibility in stem cell manufacturing.

  • University of Strathclyde

Strathclyde contributes leading capabilities in clinical interface, translational research, and industry collaboration. Home to the Advanced Formulation Group and a key partner in cell manufacturing innovation, Strathclyde strengthens the Hub’s links to NHS partners and the biomedical industry. The university’s experience in stakeholder engagement and community-based innovation supports the Hub’s PPIE activities. Strathclyde also leads initiatives around widening access and EDI in STEM, helping to embed inclusive practices and improve representation across all levels of the project.

  • University of Nottingham

A UK leader in additive manufacturing and biomaterials, Nottingham brings cutting-edge expertise through its Centre for Additive Manufacturing (CfAM). The team leads the Hub’s work in advanced biofabrication and customised material design, using engineering solutions to tackle scale-up challenges in cell production. Nottingham is also a national advocate for inclusive research environments and has been instrumental in the development of sector-wide EDI and research culture strategies. Their extensive networks in both academia and industry further support the Hub’s goals for collaborative impact.

Mainstream is a collaboration between three world-class academic institutions and the UK National Health Service.
